Maybelline Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Balm Swatches and Review

I'm pretty sure I first heard of these lip balms through Nouveau Cheap and I found myself wondering what the hype is all about. Lately I've been into using Aquaphor as a lip balm so it was intriguing to try out these stick balms. These retail for $3.99 (may vary depending on retailer) for 4.4 grams/.15oz of product.

The Baby Lips Lip Balms tout themselves as being a clinical strength moisturizing lip balm with SPF 20 sunscreen and are supposed to provide 8 hour moisture along with lip renewal. After four weeks, your lips are supposed to be 82% visibly less dry, 94% less rough, 77% more supple, and 77% better looking. I haven't tested these balms for four weeks but I'll try to and update when I'm done with it.

I got the two clear balms and three of the tinted balms. They each have a different flavor. The two clear ones are 05 Quenched and 10 Peppermint. The three tinted ones are 15 Cherry Me, 25 Pink Punch, and 30 Peach Kiss. Peach Kiss is the only one with shimmer.

These all have a rather thin consistency on the lips and they add a lot of shine. As someone who prefers the heavier consistency of more liquidy balms, this felt thin in comparison The balm lasted about an hour before it wore away. I'll talk about the two clear balms first and then show off swatches of the tinted ones.

Quenched: This is supposed to have a lemon basil flavor. When I first smelled this, I immediately thought of the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment. The Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment has this amazing lemon-sugar scent to it and it's absolutely addicting. Quenched smelled the same, or very very close to it (for me I couldn't really smell the basil component, it just smelled like lemon-sugar). I wouldn't go as far to say that they're exact dupes (The Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment has different ingredients and feels a little heavier on the lips) but if you're looking for a lemon-sugar scented balm, this is it!

Peppermint: This is supposed to have a peppermint flavor and man it is dead on. It smells like an excellent spearmint/peppermint chewing gum and there's nothing wrong with that in my book. I enjoy the scent of peppermint/spearmint and have been looking for a minty lip balm for ages. I used to like the C.O. Bigelow Mentha Lip Balm but that one leaves my lips looking white and paleish whereas the Peppermint balm doesn't do that at all, it is lovely and clear.

As always, bare lips

Cherry Me: This is supposed to have a cherry flavor. It does have a maraschino cherry scent to it, sort of sickeningly sweet cherry to me. I'm not too fond of the scent it isn't so strong that you'll detect it on your lips as you wear it. This has a pinky tint to it and my favorite of the three.

Pink Punch: This is supposed to have a fruit punch flavor and I'd say this is pretty dead on. I even smelled a bit of a pineapple bite to it. The tint is a milky bright pink but I'm not sure that it suits me.

Peach Kiss: This is supposed to have a peach flavor. This one was a bit different for me, sometimes it smelled peachy and sometimes it smelled waxy. I initially wasn't sure about the color in the tube but it is rather sheer on and it just adds a nice shimmer/sparkle to your lips.

My lips do feel soft but it does require reapplication. The tints are pretty though depending on your skintone and how pigmented your lips are. I feel like the packaging and the name sort of contrasts with its target market. The packaging does look cheap to me, especially with the writing on the clear tube. I'm a little confused about who this product is being marketed for. The name and packaging made me think at first that it was marketed towards kids but then it goes into it being clinical strength and how you can see results after four weeks.

I've been using it on and off and while my lips feel softer I don't know if they necessarily feel more hydrated? I disagree that you get 8 hour moisture out of it, it's something you need to reapply fairly often.

Would I buy it for myself? I'd probably get Quenched and Peppermint because I love the flavors but I don't know that I'd go out of my way to get the tinted balms.

TL;DR: thin consistency, must like stick balms, needs reapplication, nice tints, and some nice scents

Disclaimer: I received these Lip Balms for free as part of a campaign because I'm a BzzAgent. This doesn't affect my opinions on them and I wasn't paid or compensated to write this review.

  1. Your baby lips packaging is so different to ours here in NZ! Our ones are opaque.. and i assume smaller? XD idk, but all our ones (no matter the 'flavour') is clear.. o____O" i agree that it doesn't give 8 hours of moisturization - depends on if you eat etc, mine wears away in about the same amount of time as yours though~ Lovely review.. so thank you :D

  2. I think I like "Cherry Me" the best, as well. :) I'm not a fan of milky pinks, or sheer sparkly lip products. I like a nice pop of colour!

  3. The packaging is cute and draws me to it. I may their target market with the cute packaging. I'll have to see if they offer this in Canada.

  5. Interesting.... I haven't been seeing very great reviews on these. I agree with your take on the packaging and marketing. When I first saw them, I was wondering the same thing. The tints do look pretty good. I'm probably going to pass on these. Thanks for the review!

  6. Very nice review! I've been curious about these but I tend to stick with my Nivea or Blistex uncoloured balms for the most part. For coloured, I love the Cover Girl NatureLuxe ones... I may try the pink one of these.

  7. I bought Quenched a few weeks ago, and I agree with your review of it. Doesn't last very long, but it's silky and smooth while it's on. For me, Quenched didn't smell like much of anything at all (which isn't a bad thing I guess). I'll have to smell it again when I get home to see if I can pick out the lemon/basil notes. But the last few times I've worn it, I didn't notice much of a scent/flavor at all. I wear mine just before bed, and rely on other lip glosses during the day.

  8. I have Pink Punched, but don't wear it as often since I feel it is a bit too PINK for me. I do like the way they feel on the lips though. Great post. ^^
