Charlotte Tilbury Colour Chameleon Eyeshadow Pencil in Amber Haze: Swatch and Review

I Purchased This Affiliate Link

Oh how I am such a stan for Charlotte Tilbury and her makeup line. When it launched months ago in the UK, I waited patiently for it to come to the US (since I was not going to pay exorbitant amounts in UK shipping). It's launched on Beautylish and after swatching the line, I bought the Colour Chameleon Eyeshadow Pencil in Amber Haze. Although the color selections are set up as Day/Night for different eye colors, I picked my selection based on the color that I liked the most.

More details, swatches, and the results of my 10-hour wear test will be available under the cut!

Where to Purchase: Beautylish, Nordstrom (affiliate)
Price: $26.00 for 1.6 grams/.06 oz
Do they test on animals?: The company does not.
Packaging: The Colour Chameleon Eyeshadow Pencil comes as a sharpenable pencil. Any dual pencil sharpener should work with it. I did notice at the Beautylish event that the lettering on their sample items had worn off over use and while mine has not done that yet, I expect that mine will too. The cap also catches the air bubble inside and might resist closing initially but pushing firmly will ensure proper closure.

Amber Haze is a beautiful deep amber bronze with a fine multicolor shimmer that is very evident in direct sunlight.

Application:

It's creamy and easy to get a line of pigmented color. On your hand, you've got about 30 seconds before it sets but on your eyes, it sets much more quickly.

I experimented with the pencil to find the best way to apply and blend the eyeshadow since it sets so quickly. I tried straight from the pencil, using my finger, using a fluffy brush, etc and have come to the conclusion that the best method is to apply using a stiffish shader brush. Using the Sonia Kashuk Small Eyeshadow Brush, I brushed it over the eyeshadow pencil tip and applied it to my eye. This way, you can blend and apply without losing the color or blending the sparkles away.

Swatch:

Amber Haze is a beautiful deep amber bronze. The swatch is taken in natural daylight with no flash. It's wonderfully pigmented, no sheerness here.

Claims:

Waterproof and Smudgeproof for up to 10 hours.

Formula:

The formula completely lives up to its claim of 10 hour wear. I wore the eyeshadow pencil with and without primer and didn't have a hint of creasing after 10 hours. I did find it to be waterproof throughout the day but noticed it wasn't as smudgeproof after the 10 hours (which I wasn't surprised about).

Here's how it wore with primer: (I accidentally smudged the outer corner before I took the photo which is why it looks extra smudged, but it wasn't smudged beforehand)

Charlotte Tilbury With Primer

Here's how it wore without primer:

With or without primer, there's no creasing in sight!

Conclusion:

If I could give it a grade, I would give it a B+, B standing for "Buy if you love Charlotte Tilbury but only if you don't mind the high maintenance application and quick setting time." I recommend applying it using a stiff brush because it's the only way you'll be able to blend the edges without removing the sparkle.

I personally don't like that I have to sharpen the pencil, especially when there's not a lot of product inside for the price. I love the wear on me but it's definitely an expensive wear.

Of no doubt, this is a luxury product and thankfully it lives up to its claims, otherwise I'd return it in a heartbeat. Could you get a similar product at a cheaper price point? You most certainly can but if you do want the Charlotte Tilbury name, you'll have to shell out the $26.00. I also recommend that you skip Champagne Diamonds and Black Diamonds, both are glitter-heavy and very prone to fallout. I'm happy with my purchase but whether you'll want to buy it is up to you!

  3. This is beautiful! I'll probably need to stay away from her entire collection (or at least until I increase my makeup funds), but Amber Haze is seriously tempting!

  14. I would be totally willing to shell out that price since it has performed so well! At the same price I still have to pay anther dollar or two here for an urban decay eyeliner because of the high mark up in our sephora and just most high end brands here so if I had the chance to get some CT I would! Ekk!

  18. Hrrrrnngh. I don't WANT to buy a $26 pencil, Mai! I don't want to! But ten hours without creasing?

I'd make a LOT of allowances for ten hours without creasing.
