5 Popular Makeup Products that Didn't Work Out (for Me)

I talk a lot about products that I enjoy on the blog but I think it's worth mentioning products that didn't work out for me. It's also worth talking about hyped up or popular products that just didn't agree with me for one reason or another.

5 popular products didnt work out
The first is the Anastasia Dipbrow. My fellow bloggers Alyson and Krissy have heard me lamenting about this product for days while I was at The Makeup Show LA. Sadly while it seems to agree with most people, its formula doesn't agree with me. It's difficult to use in my opinion because you have to pick up the tiniest amount. It melted and was easily wiped away on me after only a few hours. Not cool.

The next is the Make Up For Ever Aqua Liner in #11. While I adored the variety of colors available in the line, I didn't like removing the liner. It kept breaking off in shards as I removed it and overall was a painful experience.

The next is the Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer - Light. I had hopes for this because it mentions being perfect for oily acne prone skin (which is what I have) but despite being primarily water based, it's also got silicone so it doesn't fare well with my water based or silicone based foundations. The primer didn't end up helping with oiliness or longevity.

The next is the Tarte Lipsurgence pencils. I've tried a few but it smells like minty pencil bark to me (because it's got a very woody/herbal quality to the mint) so it was very unwearable to me, despite the colors and finishes available.

Lastly is  the Wet n Wild Mega Last Liquid Lip Color. This is a liquid to matte lip color that I had such high hopes for because it had been the only drugstore liquid to matte product at the time. Sadly the product didn't work out for me because it kept flaking from my lips so I'd get red flakes on my teeth as I wore it.

How about you? Share any products you've used that didn't work out in the comments!

  2. Aww I'm sorry the dipbrow didn't work for you. I think once you figure out a technique it works well. I agree with the scent of the lipsurgence pencils. The colors are nice, but, I also find they are a bit drying.

  3. What a drag! I find my 'products that didn't work for me' are the most read of all my posts, lol. I recently bought the Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer, and it's perfect for me...but then I have dry skin. I too cannot wear the Tarte Lipsurgence pencils because of the peppermint oil. I wish brands wouldn't use it! Always so interesting to see what works and what doesn't.

  4. I don't really care much for the Revlon Just Bitten or whatever balm stain chubby pencils. I even tried one of the new ones in the matte line and I didn't care for it.

  5. The Wet n' Wild Megalast did not work for me either. I hated it. When it dried it felt terrible on my lips and I had to use lots of Baby Lips or other lip balms over it to combat the dry puckered feeling. I tried it 3 times and trashed it. Rimmel London has a similar product that I like soo much better called ShowOff.

  6. Those wet n wild lippies were just plain whack! I didn't like them, either.

  7. I know I struggle with Dipbrow. It's way too easy to overload the brush. The Nyx brow gel is way better

  8. The OCC lip tars- it kills me that I hate them because the colours are amazing. They just do not work at all, no matter how I apply them. The much-hyped Collection Lasting Perfection concealer was awful on me too, sadly.

  9. The W&W lip product didn't work for me either!

  10. I'm so glad you mentioned the Smashbox primer. None of them have ever worked for me. I don't get it. But, everyone's skin is different, and it's popular, so it must work for others!

  12. That wet n wild lip color was so hard to remove for me and flaked more than I cared for it too...such a disappointment as the range came in pretty colors

  13. I actually haven't tried any of these items!

  14. Primers are hit or miss. One which didn't work for me was Nars Pro-Prime. It left my face feeling greasy.

  15. I love the tarte LipSurgence.

  17. Good to know about these products because some of them I have really wanted to try - like the primer (like you I have oily & acne prone skin. Good to know that it didn't work for your skin because it probably won't work for mine either!) I've never tried the Tarte lipsurgence but I love the Revlon Just Bitten lip stains!

  18. I had the same problem with the Smashbox primer. I have oily/acne prone skin and it seemed to soak into my skin so much (or something) that it didn't provide a base at all. I was pretty disappointed since it cost so much, but at least I could go back to a cheaper primer. The Laura Mercier primer works perfectly for me.

  21. Nars Orgasm was a major disappointment for me. I thought it was "normal" that I had to insist, and insist, and insist for the color to show up, but whenever I used it on my friends, they would get this lovely tone with just the first swipe T_T

  22. Smashbox Primer doesn't work for me either. I thought I was crazy lol

  23. I think Anastasia should repackage the Dipbrow and make it easier to get just the tiniest amount that you need. Seems universal that it's difficult to not get too much. Sometimes, I think that if we pay a lot for a luxury item, we rationalize to ourselves that we should like it because it's so expensive.

  24. Agreed about the primer-- looks there are a lot of us who have had issues.

  25. I HATED that Megalast lol. Everyone was raving and so I picked one up to try. It was honestly like I used nail polish on my lips. Horrid!

  26. Aw, too bad you didn't like the Smashbox primer. I did. I emptied it and didn't repurchase but still, I liked it.

  27. Great post! I love your honest reviews.

Do you have a review of Vain Pursuits? My friends are all talking about it!

  28. Some of these surprise me because I've only heard good things. I agree with the Smashbox primer but that applies to all silicone-based primers for me.
