BH Cosmetics Foil Eyes Palette - A Dupe for the Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows?

I Purchased This Affiliate Links

Hey everyone! Today I have a review of the BH Foil Eyes Palette. I first learned about this palette on Instagram when it was being touted as a dupe for the Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows. The palette itself only costs $12.00 whereas a single Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadow costs $10.00 I really like the Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows but I'm down for anything that can emulate it for a fraction of the price.

BH Foil Eyes vs. Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows

Visually, the colors seem very similar to the Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows line, but are they truly similar? Click thru to see my swatches, read my review, and see a comparison.

Where to Purchase: BH Cosmetics
Price: $12.00 for 44.8 grams/1.58 oz. Each eyeshadow is 1.6 grams. BH Cosmetics is one of the brands that has their products on "perpetual sale" so the "usual" price is $19 but in reality it's been selling for $12.00 since the beginning.
Do they test on animals?: The company does not test on animals.
Packaging: The Foil Eyes palette comes in a black plastic palette with a clear frosted lid. The eyeshadows are held in a cheap-feeling black plastic and I noticed that one of the pans was loose in the palette. I've seen a few people say that their pans weren't securely glued in so this is a palette you may want to keep at home.

Size-wise, each of the BH Foil Eyes aren't much smaller than the Makeup Geek Foiled, 1.6 grams vs. 1.8 grams.

Formula:

Admittedly I didn't have high expectations that this palette would live up to the Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows, even after seeing a few peoples' swatches. I mean $12 for a whole palette of 28 eyeshadows? To my surprise, I'm actually pleased with these eyeshadows and I think they're excellent for anyone who loved the Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows but hated the creasing.

The Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows are very pigmented and metallic-looking, thanks to the different emollient ingredients and binders. However because of it, the formula tends to crease sooner even with a primer. The BH Foil Eyes aren't as metallic or creamy as the Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows because they have less of the emollient ingredients and binders but it means they wear more like a traditional eyeshadow and crease much less. Like the Foiled Eyeshadows, I prefer applying the BH Foil Eyes with my fingers and that helps me get a very similar effect on my eyes.

Because the Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows are creamier, it spreads easily and you don't need as much product. The BH Foil Eyes are more like a traditional eyeshadow so I find I have to dip back into the pan to get more product because it's more like a powder.

All of the Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows are pigmented whereas I did notice some shades in the BH Foil Eyes palette weren't as pigmented or metallic. #5 wasn't pigmented, while #18, #20, and #26 didn't look as metallic. The rest of the palette is surprisingly good and for $12.00, it's very inexpensive.

I think they're not a "dupe" in the traditional sense of the word, but they're an excellent and inexpensive alternative to the Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows.

Keep in mind though that the formulas for both are drastically different. Makeup Geek's eyeshadows have no talc, whereas the BH Foil Eyes eyeshadows are talc-based (though many high end brands do use talc in their eyeshadows so it's not an ingredient to cause concern).

Wear Time:

I noticed some fallout with the BH Foil Eyes eyeshadows and minimal fallout with the Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows but this was virtually eliminated when I used an eyeshadow primer. Both the Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows and BH Foil Eyes maintained their metallic or near-metallic finish throughout the wear but the Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows did crease at least 1-2 hours sooner than the BH Foil Eyes even when I used a primer.

I got about 6/7 hours of wear with a primer out of the Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows while I got 8+ hours of wear with a primer out of the BH Foil Eyes.

The eyeshadows are difficult to capture in photos, they do look more shimmery/metallic in real life!

Swatches:

I swatched each of the eyeshadows using my fingers because that's how I plan on applying them onto my eyes. These were swatched over eyeshadow primer. Each row of swatches is how it appears in the palette. The first row is BH Foil Eyes #1-7. The second row is BH Foil Eyes #8-14. The third row is BH Foil Eyes #15-21. The last row is BH Foil Eyes #22-28. The pigmentation is surprisingly good, especially for an inexpensive eyeshadow palette!

Based on a visual comparison, I'll share the colors that I think look close to Makeup Geek eyeshadows.

In the first row: #2 looks close to High Wire, #3 looks close to Daydreamer (it's not identical, you'll see below), #5 looks close to Charmed (also not identical, #5 is less pigmented), #6 looks close to In the Spotlight (In the Spotlight is a little peachier).

In the second row: #8 looks close to Whimsical, #10 looks close to Caitlin Rose (buy Caitlin Rose instead because the purchase price goes to support individuals with Batten Disease), #11 looks close to Pegasus, #12 looks close to Jester.

In the third row: #15 looks close to Starry Eyed#17 looks close to Center Stage, #20 looks close to Untamed.

In the last row: #24 looks close to Masquerade, #27 looks close to Flamethrower, and #28 looks close to Showtime.

So about half of the palette has colors that look close enough to Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows.

Comparison to Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows:

Before I share comparison photos of the BH Foil Eyes next to Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows, I thought I would show a picture of both swatched next to each other so you can see the similarity in pigmentation, even though it's not as metallic/reflective. Like I said, you can get a very comparable look with improved wear time (if you have oily eyelids).

From left to right: Makeup Geek Charmed, BH Foil Eyes #7, BH Foil Eyes #11, Makeup Geek In The Spotlight, BH Foil Eyes #27

Here are some of the BH Foil Eyes next to similar Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows.

From left to right: BH Foil Eyes #5 (one of the least pigmented Foil Eyes shadows), Makeup Geek Charmed, BH Foil Eyes #3 (more purple and less silvery than Daydreamer), Makeup Geek Daydreamer, BH Foil Eyes #6 (not as peachy as In the Spotlight), Makeup Geek In the Spotlight.

Conclusion:

If you like the effect of the Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows and have oily lids, I highly suggest trying out the BH Foil Eyes Palette. Pair these with a primer or use it wet and these look much more reflective. Just a head's up though that the packaging is cheap and I've seen a few reviews where the pans weren't securely glued into the palette. I absolutely think you can get a similar look to the Foiled Eyeshadows and for $12.00, it's less than the cost of two Foiled Eyeshadows with a better wear time. I believe BH Cosmetics will be launching in some ULTA stores so perhaps you'll be able to see these in person in the upcoming months!

Are you a fan of the Makeup Geek Foiled Eyeshadows or metallic-looking eyeshadows overall? Do these BH Foil Eyes eyeshadows look similar enough to warrant picking up?

  11. I'm not into the foiled eyeshadows, but I do like MUG shimmers. Never had great results with BH products, but these swatches look promising.

  12. These look so gorgeous! For $12 and that many shades you can't really go wrong. I might have to get it and then if I really love particular shades I can always buy a higher end version. Xx
