Olay Fresh Effects Dew Over Hydrating Gel Moisturizer Review

Sponsored

A big trend in moisturizers lately has been the gel formulation so I was pleased to receive a sample of the Olay Fresh Effects Dew Over Hydrating Gel Moisturizer to review from PopSugar Select. Having normal to oily skin that's also acne prone, I think it can be a challenge to find a moisturizer that is hydrating enough to my skin (to prevent my skin from overproducing oil) without being too heavy that it causes breakouts. I think for oily skin, a gel moisturizer can be a godsend since it's light enough to hydrate but won't go too heavy.

Where to Purchase: Anywhere Olay is sold (in stores and online!)
Price: $12.00-$15 for 1.7 oz of product (as prices will vary depending on the retailer.
Packaging: The moisturizer comes in a frosted plastic jar and a white plastic lid. The plastic isn't thin or lightweight, it's got some heft to it.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the jar packaging. Jar packaging isn't as hygienic as pump packaging when you have to continuously dip your fingers into the jar. As long as you have clean hands while applying, it should be okay but  it is something to consider if you are acne-prone as I am.

Formula:

Prior to opening up the jar, I was worried that the scent would be strong or overpowering (which I experienced with their BB Cream) but thankfully it's got a light fresh cucumber scent that doesn't linger on the skin. I'm glad the Fresh Effects line has the new scent and revamped that aspect of their skincare. (scent being something that can make or break a product in my opinion)

The gel is a lightly tinted green and has a slight cooling sensation as you apply which I think will be good if you're especially prone to puffiness in the morning (helping you get that "Beauty in an Instant" effect). Being a gel, it does absorb quickly into the skin. As someone who layers their skincare, I was worried that it might "pill" with my acne gel but thankfully it didn't and acted as a great moisturizer.

I personally have normal to oily skin and contrary to popular belief, normal to oily skin can still benefit from a moisturizer! I would say that this formula is more suited to the Spring and Summer months as I found it hydrating during the slightly cold, mild, and hot days but I don't feel it would be enough during the Winter months (where my skin turns much more combination). Normal to oily skintones will enjoy this formula, drier skintones may want a more emollient or creamy moisturizer.

Since the moisturizer doesn't contain SPF, always be sure to wear a sunscreen afterwards!

Conclusion

Despite the jar packaging (which I've never been a fan of), I quite liked the moisturizer. It's got this nice cooling sensation on the skin for the morning (I'm distinctly not a morning person so it's nice to have something to wake me up that isn't caffeine) and is light enough to not clog my pores but moisturizing enough for my skin.

  1. Hmmm I was interested until you said it had a cucumber smell. :( It looks wonderful, but that fake cucumber smell that some products use is pretty revolting to me. :(
