Review: Sephora Black Magic Makeup Remover Cloths - A Reusable Makeup Remover Cloth

Hey everyone! While we all love to wear makeup, we can all agree that the removal at the end of the day can be really annoying. Products like cleansing oils and makeup wipes are useful but if you want a product-less alternative, then Sephora's Black Magic Makeup Remover Cloths might be up your alley. These cloths promise to remove makeup (including eye makeup), oil, pollutants, etc with only water.

Does it live up to its claim? Continue to read the review!
If this claim of removing makeup with only water sounds familiar, it's because the cloths are Sephora's take on The Makeup Eraser (which they also happen to sell at Sephora). But whereas The Makeup Eraser costs $20.00 for a seven by sixteen inch long single cloth, you get two square eight by eight inch cloths with the Sephora Black Magic Cloths. Each cloth is sufficient for cleaning your face and I like that it comes with two it allows me to always have one cloth handy if the other cloth is dirty.

Where to Purchase: Sephora* (online and in some stores)
Price: $12.00 for two eight by eight inch cloths
Packaging: You get the cloths in a clear plastic travel bag with a zipper closure.

How to Use:

Before the first use, you'll need to wash it otherwise you'll get specks of black lint on your face (though you can easily rinse it off). After that, wet or soak the cloth in warm water (though I've been able to use cold) until it's saturated. Just a head's up that it'll repel water at first so don't put the tap on full blast. After it's wet, gently rub the cloth in a circular motion all over your face to remove the makeup. You can use this to remove your eye makeup, though I personally won't because I don't want to aggravate the skin around my eyes.

When you need to deep clean it, you can put it in the washing machine or hand wash it as long as you don't use any fabric softener (which will mess with the texture and you'll have to rewash it) or bleach.

Effectiveness:

To test out the effectiveness, I wanted to show how it removed my face makeup after 8 hour day. I wore my Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation mixed with CoverFX Custom Cover Drops which give me full coverage of my acne scarring and hyper pigmentation.

The cloth did a great job at removing my makeup after an 8 hour day. I know my skin looks red but it's just my acne scarring and not my skin being irritated. I like to use micellar water afterwards to clean off any residue but that's a personal preference. You don't need to scrub at your face, you really just need to use soft circular motions.

I know what I'll use it the most for is to remove my face makeup, especially foundation around my neck and the Black Magic cloth makes it SO much easier to remove, especially compared to using an oil cleanser.

If you're curious about the difference between this and your typical microfiber cloth, the material in these Makeup Remover Cloths is much softer, furrier, and fluffier. It actually reminds me of a plush throw blanket. The fibers aren't as flat to the surface the way microfiber clothes usually are so they feel more gentle on the skin. Could you use a washcloth? Probably but I think washcloths have shorter, less fluffy fibers so it may not work the same.

However, I personally would be a little cautious about buying this if you have a lot of cystic acne or dry patches on your skin. I think the rubbing motion (even with light pressure) may irritate any active cystic acne/pimples and may be a little rough on dry skin.

Conclusion:

$12.00 might seem a little much to pay for two cloths but I think it's super convenient to be able to remove your makeup with just water. I also appreciate the little bag you get if you want to travel with it. This is going to be especially useful when I have to remove foundation from my neck. If you're currently using disposable makeup wipes and want an alternative, you may want to consider giving this a go!

How are you currently removing your makeup? Would you venture into trying out the Black Magic Makeup Remover Cloths?

  1. It did a good job! I'll probably have to stay away, though... I'm acne prone and cystic is something I never want to deal with again lol

  2. Great review. I have tried the makeup eraser and I didn't like that so I wonder how this will work for me. I do like that this is black and not pink because it looks cleaner as well 2 cloths is a great deal compared to only getting one with the makeup eraser :)
