Lisa Eldridge True Velvet Lip Colours: Swatches and Review

I Purchased This

Hey everyone!

Today I have a long overdue review on the Lisa Eldridge True Velvet Lip Colours in Velvet Fawn and Velvet Muse. I've been watching Lisa Eldridge for many years now and I felt so keen to support her/her launch. I'll be honest with myself and admit that a majority of the appeal behind these lipsticks are because they're by Lisa, because they're rather expensive and can be harder to get since they only restock in Autumn/Winter so I wanted to get this post up before the restock/preorder (and new launches) tomorrow
October 3rd at 1600 GMT (or 8am PST/11am EST if you're in the Americas) with both the lipstick and new Gloss Embrace shipping on the 19th.

I know talking about traditional lipsticks while we're still wearing face masks seems out of place but honestly the downtime from both the pandemic and my pregnancy gave me a ton more opportunity to wear makeup at home, even when I'm not going anywhere or needing to be on any kind of online meeting.

Still, I wanted to share my thoughts especially since they're an expensive purchase!

Lisa Eldridge says:

Saturated and highly pigmented lipstick with a beautiful, true velvet effect on the surface of the bullet which looks exactly like velvet fabric. The formulation is a creamy, hydrating matte with a slight sheen - it's not a flat matte. The colour is long wearing and non drying to the lips.

Details: These lipsticks give such a luxurious vibe, which is fair since they're luxury priced. The lipsticks are
£26.00 each, about $35.00 for 3.5 grams/0.12 oz when I purchased due to the exchange rate.

Packaging: I appreciate the flat matte gold of the lipstick tube, heft/weight of the tube, magnetic closure, and debossed logo on the cap that add to the experience of applying the lipstick.

Formula: But of course what's packaging if the contents aren't good? When you first open the lipstick, you see the cool velvet looking texture embossed on the lipstick. It's honestly a little uncanny how it looks so much like velvet. It's another touch that adds to the experience because I can appreciate both the look of the lipstick in the packaging and on my lips. Back when it first launched, the velvet effect on the surface of the lipstick seemed unique though I am seeing more brands releasing lipsticks with a similar effect though not with the same matte finish.

(Sorry about the stray fur on the tube, I was taking photos on a white rug! I promise there were no stray furries on the actual lipstick)

The lipstick pretty much hits all the talking points Lisa claims. The lipstick is pigmented, feels creamy without being too slippery, and has a soft matte finish that's incredibly comfortable. It applies without skipping onto the lips or dragging. Other matte lipsticks can feel quite hard and waxy and this formula is not at all. Instead of being wax based, the lipsticks are silicone (dimethicone) based, like the silicone in your makeup primers which I think helps add to that glide and finish. By the way, these lipsticks are not vegan as they do contain beeswax. Wear time is also good, about four to five hours of wear and I didn't think these were drying to my lips at all.

I appreciate the diversity of models on the website and that definitely encouraged me to purchase. It's so hard when you're buying online and can't see the lipsticks in person and she had added an Asian model with a similar skintone to mine which basically meant Velvet Fawn and Velvet Muse were going into my cart.

Swatches

Here are arm swatches of Velvet Fawn and Velvet Muse.

And here are lip swatches of both lipsticks.

Velvet Fawn

Velvet Fawn is described as "A pretty and delicate beige cafe shade inspired by the classic heavy natural 90’s shades in Lisa’s vintage makeup collection with the addition of skin lifting, lively cool and warm undertones to make it extra flattering."

If I had to pick a favorite between the two, it'd be this one. I quite love the cafe au lait color that has enough pink to make it not too brown and enough brown to make it not too flat or washed out on the skin. It's a wonderful everyday color. Because it's a little lighter you do have to make sure to prep your lips otherwise any imperfections will show. This color also may look rosier on you depending on how pigmented your lips are.

Velvet Muse

Velvet Muse is described as "A sensual, smoky rosewood shade with the perfect mix of pinky brown and dirty rose undertones to make this shade super wearable across a wide variety of skintones."

I'm a little surprised at how much I actually like this color. Describing it as a smoky rosewood is spot on because it's not quite a pure rose but has some deep depths to it. I like wearing this lightly or mixing it with Velvet Fawn to add more of a rosy tone to Velvet Fawn's lighter beige/brown/pink tones.

Conclusion: For sure, these lipsticks are amazing to me and I adore the formula and colors. I am definitely not ignorant to the fact that a big part of the appeal behind them comes from the cool velvet embossing and the fact that they're by Lisa Eldridge but it they are still a good lipstick. A splurge to be sure since they end up around $35.00 after the exchange rate. I know the price is a lot for people so I'd classify these as a "very nice to have" and not a "must-have". I don't plan on buying any of the new lipstick colors coming out but I am thinking about buying the Gloss Embrace, the new gloss-treatment hybrid that's supposed to be super nourishing.

Are you thinking of getting anything from Lisa Eldridge's lip line?

  1. Since they are both so close in color, I'd feel the need to only pick one. And, as usual for me, I would choose the darker shade.

Since COVID, I have been staying home even more than usual. However, applying lipstick is so easy to do that I will wear it even at home. It is one of those items of makeup that's easy to apply as well as to remove. And, I have to say that it does lift my spirits.

I, too, have watched Lisa for years. I value her opinions much like I always value yours.

  3. Is her line sold anywhere here without having to buy it across the pond? You have beautiful lips and I enjoy seeing these colors on them. They are very flattering. The lipsticks look expensive!

    1. Not OP, but I believe they're only sold on Lisa Eldridge's makeup website. Shipping is free to the US, though!

  6. I just came across your blog because I realized I have Glossier and ColourPop's almost identical brow products, and agreed so hard with your assessment that I had to poke around. I've got to say, I've wanted Lisa Eldridge lipsticks since I first heard about them years ago but the price point was always out of reach. I'm finally at the point where I can loosen the purse strings a bit, and I decided to bite the bullet (heyo, lipstick pun). I bought Muse, Blush (new 2020 shade!), and Jazz, and ended up so blown away by the formula that I went back to get the Fawn and Ribbon colors too. So expensive, but the performance honestly is nothing like lipsticks I've ever used. I don't know that I'll ever want to spend money on lipsticks again if they can't match up to the creamy, velvetty, long-lasting wear. But dang they are expensive.
