Darling Girl Glitter Potion Lip Toppers in Charmed, Divine, and Ritual - Swatches, Review, and Photos

I Purchased This

Hey everyone!

It's been a little while since I posted on the blog but I do have an explanation! I got my eyebrows microbladed and wanted to wait until my brows healed before taking any photos for the blog. I also went on vacation to see my family in France so I wasn't able to blog while overseas. I am back and I'm hoping to get back into the swing of things with more reviews/looks.

I hope you enjoy today's post, a review of the Darling Girl Glitter Potion Lip Toppers. Unlike brands that are marketing lipglosses as lip toppers (here's looking at you Jouer), these are actually water-based lip toppers meant to add glitter/shine to your favorite liquid lipsticks (without breaking them down). Though I don't always wear glitter in my everyday makeup, I still love the idea behind adding a little glitter to my lip products.

These could be a dupe for Lime Crime's Diamond Toppers or Urban Decay's Vice Special Effects Long-Lasting Water-Resistant Lip Topcoats, though I can't say if they're 100% identical since I haven't tried either. Regardless, I love finding a possible indie alternative to a mainstream product.

I got three colors in Charmed, Divine, and Ritual. There are eleven colors in total.

Details/Where to Purchase: These are $13.00 for 6ml/0.20 oz. You can get them on Darling Girl Cosmetics. Darling Girl do have affiliates with affiliate codes if you'd like to get 15% off your purchase.

Packaging: These come in a standard lipgloss tube with a doefoot applicator. I did notice that two of my Glitter Potion Lip Toppers were slightly overfilled so some product was in the inner stopper when I pulled the wand out but it didn't overload the wand or make it messy.

Review:

Darling Girl says "Glitter Potion Lip Toppers are eco-friendly glitter suspended in a water based gel. The water based formula won't break down the formula of your favorite liquid matte lipsticks! Wear these iridescent lip toppers to add shifty sparkle. Wear it on top of your favorite lipstick to instantly transform it into a mystical finish, or wear alone for a pretty your lips but oh so much better effect."

The gel consistency is lightweight and thin and you get glitter without the grit. Because it's water-based, these won't break down your liquid lipsticks. It's not 100% transferproof because it's still a product with glitter but I notice very little transfer (I'm talking like a few specks) if I kiss my fiancé or take a drink. Wear time by itself is maybe two hours, it's prone to wearing off in the center if you eat. It's much better paired with a liquid lipstick, this lasts as long as the liquid lipstick does.  Can I emphasize that there's no grittiness, it won't feel like you're wearing glass on your lips.

From top to bottom: Charmed, Divine, and Ritual

Darling Girl Glitter Potion Lip Toppers in Charmed, Divine, and Ritual

Divine has the sheerest base color so it adds glitter without affecting the base color. Ritual is probably the least glittery-looking because the base color is a duochrome pink with smaller sparkles. Charmed is in the middle in terms of glittery effect, the base has a pink/yellow shifting duochrome but there are still a lot of glitters.

As long as the liquid lipstick is dry, you won't have any of the color transferring to the doefoot applicator when you're applying. If you want to apply it over a regular lipstick, you can easily apply using your fingers because it's thin and spreads easy. It takes about a minute and a half before it's fully set.

For the most glitter pop, Divine is my pick, followed by Charmed. I like Ritual the least because the base has a little pigment and when it settles into lip lines it looks like it's "cracked" on top of the liquid lipstick. Keep in mind that liquid lipsticks are already notorious for enhancing lip texture so adding this on top can add to that but remember, it's glitter!! It's not going to be for someone wanting to get a subtle look.

Swatches:

It took me a while to figure out how to best swatch the colors. I figured I could swatch them by themselves on bare lips and over a liquid lipstick to show how they wore. I included arm swatches also over a black liner to better show the effect. I used Colourpop's Ultra Blotted Lip in Party Wave as the liquid lipstick base.

Here are arm swatches over bare skin, Colourpop Party Wave, and Tarte Amazonian Clay Liner.

Charmed

Lip Photos are bare lips, Charmed over bare lips, Colourpop Party Wave, and Charmed over Party Wave.

Charmed is described as a "pinky red glitter". Charmed by itself is the photo on the top right and Charmed is applied over Colourpop Party Wave on the bottom right. You can see that Charmed slightly lightens Party Wave and adds a bit of glitter and sparkle.

Divine

Lip Photos are bare lips, Divine over bare lips, Colourpop Party Wave, and Divine over Party Wave.

Darling Girl Glitter Potion Lip Topper in Divine Lip Swatch

Divine is described as a "sheer pink with pink, gold, and blue glitters. Divine by itself is the photo on the top right and Divine is applied over Colourpop Party Wave on the bottom right. Divine doesn't alter the base color as much, just adds multi color glitter to the look.

Ritual

Lip Photos are bare lips, Ritual over bare lips, Colourpop Party Wave, and Ritual over Party Wave.

Darling Girl Glitter Potion Lip Topper in Ritual Lip Swatch

Ritual is described as a "pinky red pearl with blue sparkle". Ritual by itself is the photo on the top right and Ritual is applied over Colourpop Party Wave on the bottom right. Ritual makes the biggest color difference when applied over Party Wave. it's lighter in color and has less glitter, more shimmer.

Conclusion:

These may not be an everyday lip product for most people but it's a wonderful lip product with surprising longevity for anyone who wants to add a glitter effect without the uncomfortable gritty feel. I gotta say that it's a formula I would expect to pay a lot more for, it's a standout indie product. You can certainly layer these with a gloss if you want some added shine.
