REVIEW, COMPARISON, VIDEO + GIVEAWAY: Real Techniques Collector's Edition Eyelining Set

Press Sample

I'm very pleased and excited to review this Limited Edition Real Techniques Collector's Edition Eyelining Set of brushes. Despite the name, you can use this for other eye makeup related purposes like applying eyeshadow or eyebrow powders.

Spoiler alert: I really like this set and I like it because it's what I always wanted their Starter Set of eye brushes to be. I'll give a full review below (you can watch the accompanying Youtube video or read the review) but I want to seriously recommend this brush set for anyone who prefers using smaller eye brushes or has a smaller eye shape.

Be sure to read towards the end where I'll be giving away one of these sets!

Where to PurchaseKohls (affiliate), Real Techniques
Price$20.00 for four eye brushes and one travel pouch.
Do they test on animals?: The company does not test on animals.

You get four eye brushes in the set: the Pointed brush, the Smudge brush, the Eyeliner brush, and the Pointed brush. In contrast to their regular line of eye brushes, these have a shiny chrome finish which makes it look a lot fancier. The shapes of the brushes are also slimmer and sleeker than the regular line (comparisons below).

Review:

Feel free to watch my video review or continue reading below!

The Pointed Liner Brush (no it's not really that pointed) is a rounded paddle brush. It's suggested that you could use this for creating thin or thick lines with eyeliner but I foresee myself using this more for applying eyeshadow precisely on my eyelids. It's absolutely perfect for cream eyeshadows and it's the right size for my eyelid.

The Smudge Brush is a short half-moon paddle brush that is perfect for applying eyeshadow on my eyelid. However, I find that the brush isn't super dense and since it's not pinched too tight at the top, there's a gap that opens up when you apply a lot of pressure to the brush. It's not a big problem during application but it can be prone to drawing up too much water into the ferrule when I wash it so that's something to keep in mind. It does a good job if you'd like to apply a wash of color all over your lid.

Here's a comparison to the Accent Brush from the Starter Set. The two brushes are a little similar but you can see that the smudge brush is larger.

The Precision Liner Brush is a very thin and dense eyeliner brush. It's not floppy so you have real control. If you need to do a thin or precise line, then you'll love this brush. I'm someone who prefers using thin liner brushes like this (as opposed to angled brushes) since my eyelids are so small so I need smaller brushes to suit it.

Here's a comparison to two other Real Techniques brushes, the Fine Liner Brush and Pixel Point Eyeliner Brush (no longer available). It's even smaller and more sturdy than the Fine Liner Brush and an improvement on the original Pixel Point Eyeliner Brush that used to come in the Starter Set but was replaced by the Fine Liner brush.

The Eyeliner brush is an angled brush. It's got a fairly dense shape that's quite sturdy. I like this the most for applying eyeshadow or eyeliner to my lower lash line  You could also use the for applying eyebrow powder or pomade to your eyebrows.

Here's a comparison to the Brow Brush that comes in the Starter Set. The Eyeliner brush is much smaller in length and height and much more dense. You'll get a much more controlled look with the Eyeliner Brush.

Compared to starter kit, pretty much all the brushes feel superior and more dense. I feel like the shape for each brush is well-thought out and they really suit how I do makeup and my eye shape much better.

Conclusion:

Quite honestly, I'm a little sad that this is a limited edition set because I prefer this set over the current Starter Set in the regular lineup. Based on my eye shape and how I do my eye makeup, the shapes in this set are great and make more sense for me. If you're thinking about getting either this or the Starter Set, I highly suggest checking this one out!

  1. Hello, Mai! I saw this post when searching for eyeliner brushes from Real Techniques. Have you tried the Eye Detail + Define brush set from Real Techniques? I have similar eyeshape to yours, maybe a bit smaller eyelid space, and I am looking for eyeliner brush for drawing thin eyeliner. I am still undecided whether to buy the eyelining set or the detail + define set. If you have tried the detail + define set, please let me know about your opinion of the two brush sets.
You have a really nice and informative post. Thank you so much.

    1. Hey there! I personally haven't tried that set but I'm also someone who prefers pointy eyeliner brushes instead of angled brushes. Depending on the type of eyeliner you use (like if you use gel), honestly you might be able to find a cheap synthetic art brush but I know ELF makes a bent eyeliner brush that might be good for you
