The keynotes and seminars are included in your ticket while the All Day Hands on Workshops are extra and allow for a more intimate learning opportunity. I also love that there are workshops in Spanish to meet the needs of the industry.

I'll be attending the show on Saturday November 10th because the next day I'm getting married!!! I hope you have a great time if you're able to attend the show.

The Makeup Show LA 2017: Purchases/Haul

I Purchased This Affiliate Links Press Sample

Hey everyone!

Today I wanted to talk about some of the products I purchased/received while I was at The Makeup Show LA earlier this month. The Makeup Show LA is by far one of the greatest makeup shows in LA, giving professionals in the industry the opportunity to get the most relevant education from the best of the best and stock up on their kit. The last event for the year is the Makeup Shop NYC, a popup event open to the public which gives you the opportunity to shop and get some education too in a lighter format!

I had the opportunity to attend a press preview and get materials from a variety of exhibiting brands and I also shopped around on Sunday to get brands that I might not normally be able to try in person (and at a good price). My purchases/haul span quite a few brands so I thought I'd break it down into Eye Products, Lip Products, Face Products, Brushes, and Skincare. The products I received at the press preview are highlighted with an asterisk*.

Here's the cumulative haul but I have pictures from each section if you'd like more information with my thoughts on some of the products. I'll also have links to each product in case something interests you!

Announcement: The Makeup Show LA 2017 - November 4th and 5th

Hey everyone!

I'm so excited to talk about one of my favorite events of the year, The Makeup Show LA! If you're not familiar, this is a professional trade show for individuals in the beauty industry. Unlike other trade shows, this is geared towards working professionals and has much to offer for someone looking to expand their knowledge and network in the community.

The show actually used to be held in March but this year it's being held in November. The dates are Saturday, November 4, 9:00 am – 6:00 pm and Sunday, November 5, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm at the California Market Center in Downtown LA.

Unlike most other trade shows, they emphasize the opportunity to stock up your kit while also learning from those working in the industry without judgment.

Here are some of the offerings and some of my picks for brands to look out for at the show:

The Makeup Show LA 2016: Show Recap

Hey everyone! I know it's about a month late but I still wanted to give a show recap on The Makeup Show LA, sharing information about some of the brands I saw there. I was able to interview James Vincent, the Director of Education and Artistry for The Makeup Show and will be posting that soon. The Makeup Show NY is coming up in a few weeks so this can be a preview of what you will expect if you attend the NY Show!

Check out some of the brands I saw and information on their products and upcoming releases!

Get your calendar ready for March because soon it'll be time for The Makeup Show LA! The Makeup Show LA is bar none, my favorite makeup event to attend. The Makeup Show is a pros-only event that visits multiple cities throughout the year including NYC, Dallas, Chicago, Orlando, and of course LA! They have also started doing Pop-Up shops which are two day events open to the public that allow you to shop from a variety of makeup brands. If you aren't able to travel to one of the shows, the Pop-Up Shops allow you to shop from the professional brands!

You can purchase tickets online here.

In honor of the 10th anniversary, The Makeup Show will be having a gala on March 18th at 7:30 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. The theme is "Femme Fatale", and they will be honoring Susan Cabral-Ebert for her work and dedication to the makeup industry as President of The Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild, IATSE Local 706. You'll be able to mix and mingle with your makeup idols while enjoying hors-d’oeuvres, drinking, and dancing. You'll be able to get tickets on TheMakeupShow.com and you can get a discount if you get the gala ticket along with your ticket to The Makeup Show LA.

As it turns out, Alyson (who I've gone to the show with multiple times) also has a list of brands to check out and she and I have pretty much the identical list. Instead of compiling my own list since it's practically the same as Alyson's, I wanted to share tips from James Vincent, who is the Director of Education and Artistry for The Makeup Show. He's compiled a list of upcoming trends for 2016 and products to check out for the trends at The Makeup Show LA and I've added in my personal picks!

"The runway and red carpet have given us some new twists on classic trends this season that allow the makeup wearer to make a choice based on individuality which is always exciting!" - James Vincent

Trend: Candy Apple Red Lips
The classic vintage allure of red lips is timely and timeless and can be worn by anyone, anywhere and anytime. Try combining a bold blue red lipstick with a warmer red gloss for a lip look that is alluring on anyone. Combining the two undertones makes the lip flattering for any face. If you are afraid to try a bold red try staining on the lip in a more sheer application or a gorgeous red gloss. A few of my favorites for lipstick are NARS Audacious Lipsticks, Besame Lipsticks with a vintage inspiration or OCC Makeup Liptar in NSFW. For a gloss Inglot Cosmetics has a wide array of shades.

My Personal Picks: NARS Rita, Besame Cherry Red, OCC NSFW

Trend: Blue Eyeliner
Blue Liner is back and can be a simple way to get a sophisticated fashion look. The traditional cat eye takes in new life in shades of blue and a blue hue will whiten and brighten the eyes and lenghten lashes. Try NARS Eye Paint in Solomon Islands for a waterproof option in an unforgettable turquoise, or for a less dramatic look a blackened blue Liner from Cao Cosmetics or Smashbox works well on everyone. Pair it with a neutral shadow for a natural look or add in a touch of color on the lids for more flair.

My Personal Picks: NARS Solomon Islands (I love it!), Smashbox French Navy

Trend: Red Eye Shadow
Gaga has given everyone the idea to try red shadow, and while it seems unexpected red can be a very flattering look on the eyes when work properly. MAKE UP FOR EVER has both cream and pressed shadows in warm red hues that can be worn across the lid or just as liner. KETT Cosmetics Metals are a beautiful liquid option that look sheer and sophisticated in a warm red shade that you will love.

My Personal Picks: Make Up For Ever ME740 , Kett Cosmetics TNT

Trend: Black Graphic Liner
The new crops of eyeliner pens allow for easy liquid lines with a kitten kick or more dramatic graphic looks. Kat Von D Tattoo Liner has a perfectly precise tip for everyday or more adventurous lines. MAKE UP FOR EVER and NARS have waterproof options and for those on a budget Mustaev and Crown Brush offer black liquid pens that allow anyone to try the look. Of you are not comfortable with creating the perfect Liner look use a soft taupe shadow or pencil to perfect your shape and trace back over it with black. It will give you a great guide and offer more dimension to elevate a liner look.

My Personal Picks: Kat Von D Tattoo Liner, MUFE Aqua Eyes, NARS Via Veneto

Trend: Metallic Eyes
Mined metals like copper, bronze and gold give anyone a look that is great for summer and right into fall. Melanie Mills Hollywood Rose Gold is an unexpected take on this trend that is unforgettable. Kat Von D and MAKE UP FOR EVER metal powders are a great addtliton to any makeup kit.

My Personal Picks: Make Up For Ever Metal Powder, Kat Von D Thunderstruck,

Hopefully you found the tips on upcoming trends for 2016 helpful! I hope to see you there at The Makeup Show LA!

The Makeup Show LA: Brands, Education, and Products to Look Out For

Although I won't be able to make it on Saturday for sure, I'll still mention some of the talks worth seeing (though all of them are!)

Main Floor Seminar: Beauty Business for Entrepreneurs - Erik Kaiser for Glamcor at 4:00-4:45

-Brands/Products-

Beautylish - They will have Rae Morris Brushes and Bioderma Sensibo H20, need I say more?

GlamcorTec - Lighting is never to be overlooked when doing your makeup and Glamcor offers professional and consumer lighting options. They're a bit expensive but are worth the investment!

Kat Von D Beauty - Kat Von D is making their debut at The Makeup Show. Although I don't currently own anything from the brand, I know that their Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks get so much love and I hope they'll be featuring some of the new metallic Liquid Lipsticks that I saw on their Instagram!

Make Up For Ever - Make Up For Ever recently came out with their Step 1 Skin Equalizer primers, a range of primers targeted for specific purposes. In the age of multitasking products, the Skin Equalizer Primers take a more specific approach; five formulas correct texture and five correct tone. Each serves a different purpose and can be mixed together.

Mario Badescu - I love their skincare and love that they're catering to makeup artists since skincare prep is huge. I think many makeup artists and professionals will appreciate their presence at the show. I'm personally a fan of their Drying Cream for blemishes.

MustaeV - Mustaev is a Korean makeup brand making their Makeup Show debut. Their presence at the show is especially interesting since the American makeup market has been embracing Asian (especially Korean) innovations in their products so I'm looking forward to see what they have to offer for the pros at the show.

NARS Cosmetics - Between their launches of the Audacious Lipsticks, Dual Intensity Blushes, and Luminous Weightless Foundation, my wallet is sad. I already have plans to get two of their Audacious Lipsticks and the Luminous Weightless Foundation (if I can find a color match!).

NYX Cosmetics - Their transition into professional friendly products means that their Makeup Show debut is no real surprise. They have recently jumped into the contour game and the rest of their products seem to do well with consumers so it's understandable that they want to cater to professionals.

Senna Cosmetics - Senna is selling Pro Brow Brush and Brow Shaper Powders. Anastasia Beverly Hills is often touted as "the" brand for brow products but do not overlook Senna. They have some great brow products that are worth a glance!

Event Recap: The Makeup Show LA 2014

This is sadly so very belated but here's my coverage of The Makeup Show LA. I've attended many a trade show over the last few years and by far, The Makeup Show LA is my favorite. It is a pro-only show but I appreciate the opportunity to attend because it really allows me intimate access to the brands and brand owners. I have the opportunity to ask more information about the brand, get insider information about future collections, swatch some products that may not be available in person and to get a sense of how professionals actually use the products!

Here are some photos from the show. I also got a few new things that are coming out soon that I'll try to review soon!

This is going to be a photo-heavy post so I've put everything behind a cut. Let this photo of Kevyn Aucoin's personal kit entice you in...

The Makeup Show LA 2013 Recap Part Two

(Hello, I hope you've clicked through here from my Part One recap over at Phyrra's blog. If you haven't, check out my Part One recap of The Makeup Show LA of brands like Stila, NARS, Inglot, etc!)

Can I say again how much I enjoy going to The Makeup Show? It's just so exciting being able to interact with brand owners and creative directors without having to worry about massive crowds (and the discounts are nice too!). Being able to preview some of the new releases from some of these brands is perhaps the best part!

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tars

OCC featured their new Spring 2013 Sci-Fi Lullabies Colour Collection. This Blade Runner-inspired collection features several lip tars in their new Metallic formula with two in their typical creme formula. I was able to take close up pictures and swatches of these lip tars so feel free to check out my post here. The collection will be on sale tomorrow and I hope you find my swatches helpful when considering making a purchase (you should just get Power Plant for mixing). The lip tars finally have the names printed directly on the packaging now as opposed to on a sticker so hopefully this means that the names won't be smudged off anymore!

The Sci-Fi Lullabies Collection. Power Plant isn't part of the collection but it suits it so well.

OCC Sci-Fi Lullabies Spring 2013 Colour Collection

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics

Enkore Makeup/Pursebuzz

Enkore Makeup Pro Brush Soap

Koren and Elessa's booth was the first I went to when I got to the show. Koren was too nice to me and spoiled me by gifting me one of his brush soaps in Apricot Freesia (he wasn't selling that specific scent at the show but had many scents available). His brush soap finished their soft launch and will finally debut in a full launch in plastic flip-top containers for easier storage. The formula has slightly changed from the original brush soap I purchased back at IMATS but change is a good thing as it was to accommodate customers who were worried about the palm, coconut, and sweet almond oil. It's nice to see that Koren took his customers' feedback to heart and that it won't compromise the performance of the soap. The combined soap/loofah is such a good idea and a great alternative if you're like me and not willing to shell out $40.00 on a glorified silicone oven mitt ;) I also got two glitters from Violet Voss courtesy of the show so I'll be trying those out too.

Embryolisse

Embryolisse

I always have to make a point to stop by Embryolisse's booth. The owners are always so nice and it's just fun to say hello. My family in France usually visits every year or two so I usually get my Embryolisse fix from them. The brand will be on Hautelook today* so if you're interested on getting your hands on them through there, you can! Robyn of Purely Cosmetics was there too; someday I'll get my hands on that Diamond Powder of hers.

Jacks Beauty Line

Jack's Beauty Line

Jacks Beauty Line is a line of makeup brushes from Miriam Jacks, a makeup artist from Berlin who runs Jacks Beauty Department. These brushes with its speckled handles are Jackson Pollack's dream. The handles themselves are actually handrolled by Miriam Jacks so all of them are unique prints. The brushes themselves felt quite soft and sturdy, they looked really interesting!

Ellis Faas

Ellis Faas Cosmetics

If I could sum up the brand Ellis Faas in one word, it'd have to be luxurious, in two words luxuriously sleek. These silver bullet-shaped pens house a click-pen mechanism dispensing all types of liquid eye, face, and lip products. No doubt, these are an investment but I'm thoroughly enjoying the Creamy Lips pen I received courtesy of the show.

Senna Cosmetics

Senna Cosmetics Eyeshadows and Blushes

Senna Cosmetics is most known most for their brow products but their eyeshadows are worth a look. The blushes are more on the natural side but have a great mixture of matte and satins that are flattering for light to medium skintones. The eyeshadows were all very pigmented and had I had the budget, I would have picked up one of the Haute Nudes palettes.

Senna Cosmetics

I hope you enjoyed this recap of the show. I have a backlog of stuff to review that I got at the show and I thoroughly can't wait until next year's show (assuming I'm close enough to attend!).

Coming This Weekend: The Makeup Show LA 2013

The Makeup Show LA

I know I know, another beauty trade show? I have to say though that The Makeup Show LA is probably my favorite of the three beauty/spa related trade shows I've attended. The overall atmosphere and relaxed vibe of everyone there is such a sharp contrast to IMATS's frenzied and overwhelming feel.

If you want more information on the show, here's a brief press release about the brands that will be at the show.

"LOS ANGELES, CA – In its 5th year, The Makeup Show LA grows with even more exhibitors, beauty and education than ever before. With over 75 brands, 6 keynote speakers, 20 seminars, and 14 hands-on workshops, this will be a show not to miss!

Amongst these NEW brands in attendance will be NARS Cosmetics, AJ Crimson, Ofra Cosmetics, Cult Nails, Dante Disposables, Face Atelier, Gorgeous Cosmetics, Jacks Beauty Line, Premiere Products, Saucebox Cosmetics, Tweezerman, Cao Cosmetics, to name just a few! In addition, more than 60 returning top pro-focused brands will be joining the show once again, including MAKE UP FOR EVER, Temptu Pro, Smashbox, INGLOT, Stila, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, Alcone, Senna Cosmetics, Ellis Faas, Embryolisse USA, Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics, Kevyn Aucoin, and South Seas Skincare, amongst many more!

Shelly Taggar, Vice President for The Makeup Show states, “We are excited to make the fifth year of The Makeup Show LA one the biggest and best years yet. By responding to the needs of pro artists in every market we have added many new internationally known brands to this years roster of exhibitors. The Makeup Show LA will continue to be the west coast must-attend event for all those working and studying in the beauty and fashion industries.”

In addition to new exhibitors, attendees will find themselves immersed in two days dedicated solely to artistry, networking, community, inspiration and education. Pro’s will not only be able to fill their beauty kit with pro-driven essentials, but they can refine their skill-set in exclusive hands-on workshops and seminars, and explore business strategies and opportunities during forums and keynotes. So much inspiration to be found in every corner!

The Makeup Show LA is held on March 2, 2013 from 9am to 6pm and on March 3, 2013 from 9am to 5pm at California Market Center, 110 East Ninth Street, Los Angeles, CA. For a complete list of participating brands, educational speakers, schedule of events and prices, please visit www.themakeupshow.com."

***********************

I'm going to have to check out all the new brands at the show. NARS wasn't there last year so it's really exciting that they'll be coming. AJ Crimson and Sam Fine Beauty are particularly interesting as that cater to deeper women of color skintones (a niche that I'm glad to see being filled). Jacks Beauty Line has some amazingly beautiful makeup brushes with artistically speckled handles. Cult Nails is lauded so often by members of the nail polish community that it's going to be a must for me. I should stop looking at the exhibitor list because it only serves to increase my lemmings.

If you're interested in attending, you have until Thursday to purchase tickets. If you purchase online, the one day tickets are $45.00 and two day $65.00. At the door tickets are  $55.00 for one day and $75.00 for two. This is a Pro-Only show so you must have the proper credentials to attend. More information on credentials and tickets can be found here.

Have you ever attended any of The Makeup Shows? Will you be attending this weekend?

My Experiences at The Makeup Show LA!

I wanted to start out this post by including a picture of me with Amy and Yume of Sugarpill. I got to spend part of the afternoon with them and it was an amazing experience, not even hampered by my awkwardness! Haha I think you can tell that I was severely underdressed next to them.

Amy, Yume, and I

I met the lovely Elessa of Pursebuzz too! Her jewelry and accessories are so so cute and she is just as nice in person as she is in her Youtube videos.

Elessa of Pursebuzz and I

Onto my experience at the show. The first place I checked out was OCC Makeup. This was a candid shot of the owner David Klasfeld, doing his thing and me catching him in the wild. He was extremely nice and easy to talk to. I got to ask him a few questions about the Lip Tar packaging change (which I covered in my last post) and it was an enjoyable experience! I can't recall the exact discount, only that OCC Lip Tars were $10.00 as opposed to $14.00

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics

I must have had a lapse in blogging judgment because I didn't do any swatches of the upcoming collection, but here's a picture showing the collection off.

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics

More Lip Tars in their new packaging!

New OCC Lip Tar Packaging

After finishing up at the OCC booth, I headed towards Make Up For Ever's booth. I'm glad I got there early because while it was a little busy at 9ish, it was even worse later on in the afternoon. Everything was at least 40% off with select items (like the Aqua Liner and Aqua Eyes) being 50% off.

Make Up For Ever Eyeshadows

To add to the chaos, only one of their registers was working so that led to lines like this. They made a minor mistake when checking me out (the Aqua Liner rang up as only 40% off versus 50% off but they resolved that quickly!). This is how long the line got at 10:30, an hour and a half after the show opened!

Line at Make Up For Ever

This was the crowd at the Inglot booth at 9:25am so it got super packed very quickly. Everything was discounted 30%.

Inglot booth

So many potted eyeshadows!

Inglot booth

25 minutes in and someone completely spilled a pigment jar into another one. The table full of pigments was utterly droolworthy though.

Inglot Pure Pigment Eyeshadows

OCC, MUFE, and Inglot were the brands on the top of my list to check out first so after that, I explored the venue a bit. IMATS, one of the other big makeup artists trade shows, seems to be really big into special effects whereas The Makeup Show didn't seem to have much of that. I did enjoy this character all made up.

Awesome Special Effects

and this gorgeous girl being body painted (may not be suitable for work)

Mehron Body Paint

and this makeup job just blew me away!

Gorgeous makeup

I enjoyed this booth for the hottie being spray tanned ;)

South Seas booth

I also enjoyed the Dinair booth, they had a gorgeous model dressed up in bridal wear to show off the makeup and a fantastic show deal.

Dinair booth

Dinair bridal model

I detoured and spent a few minutes checking out the Hakuhodo booth although I didn't pick anything up. Their Yachiyo brushes looked amazing though.

Hakuhodo Yachiyo Brushes

Kevyn Aucoin was at the show too, having deep discounts ranging from 20%-91%!

Kevyn Aucoin booth

I scoped out Youngblood's booth because I've heard Dustin say great things about the brand.

Youngblood Cosmetics

The lovely Pursebuzz's booth!

The lovely people at the Pursebuzz booth

and to finish off the post, the lovely Yume, Suzy, Lauren and Amy!

Yume, Suzy, Lauren, and Amy

All in all, I quite enjoyed The Makeup Show. Judging from other peoples' experiences, it seemed to be on a much more intimate scale than IMATS. I went to Pursebuzz's Tools and Trends seminar where she helped to show off and explain the uses of some basic and new Crown Brushes. I thoroughly enjoyed the shopping and meeting tons of great people there! I should have my haul from the show posted soon.

Have you ever gone to The Makeup Show? Or IMATS? Do you want to go?

I wanted to take the time to thank Melody who works as the PR for the Makeup Show. She was extremely nice and introduced me to David Klasfeld of OCC, so thank you Melody!
