Update on the Lime Crime Chinadoll campaign

*Here's an update to this update! Please read after you've finished this post. If you did not read my original post, please click here to get all the details!*

In the interest of being true and fair, I felt I owed it to everyone who's been keeping up with the Lime Crime Chinadoll campaign for its eyeshadow palette and my blog post on the subject to tell you that the owner of Lime Crime, Doe Deere, has reached out and has messaged me. She told me that she had read my post on the issue carefully and wanted to ask me a few questions. That's all that's been said as of now. I am waiting for her email and will update on things after corresponding with her. I will be as open as I can about this issue since I owe it to you guys who have invested your time into what's happened.

My interests lie in making the best of what's happened while still staying true to you guys as readers (and for anyone else who's interested the events that happened). I will say now that I have no interest in receiving or purchasing any Lime Crime products, for review or for personal use. It would be unscrupulous to accept or purchase anything from the brand at this time and in the future. This is my opinion.

However, I should say that if you choose to purchase from the brand, I won't and shouldn't chastise you for that. It's your money, you should spend it however you like without being judged for it and I'm in no position to tell you that you shouldn't purchase from a company whose products you enjoy. What I do with my money is my business the same way that what you do with your money is yours. I can only offer my opinion and hope that you take that into consideration when you shop (and this applies to all of my posts, not just this one).

I think it may be important to say that I don't necessarily think that companies can't change, mainly because if I did think a company couldn't change, then they don't really have any reason to change and it'd be a self fulfilling prophecy. This is not directed towards any company at all, but a general statement that should apply when companies make mistakes.

Anyway, sorry for the pictureless post, it's not the most exciting one I've ever done.

I'm curious now, in your opinion, what should Lime Crime do about what's happened so far and with the Chinadoll campaign?

  1. I am very unbiased about the whole thing. I understand it offends some people, I understand some people are very PROLIMECRIMEFOLIFE! But one thing I do have a problem with is the bullying on the facebook page. Some comments were removed for being rude and vicious to one of the looks submitted for the makeupbee contest. Regardless of like the brand or not, I don't think people need to be bitchy and horrible to other girls, we all have our own opinions and we all have the autonomy to express them but some people took it too far on that page. The way you express your opinion is perfect and unoffensive and in a very grown up manner :) I am just sad because others feel the need to be malicious to poor girls who like the brand :( I have no idea what Doe/Lime Crime is going to do.. I think the most suitable solution would be to keep the palette and perhaps change the name? I myself (and just my opinions) do not have a problem with either the palette, advertisement or name, just my opinion please don't hate. I love the chinese culture and see it as more of a celebration but I ofcourse do see how others see it as offensive. If you are offended by something you can't change that, nobody can change that and nobody should try and change that! Anyways, i'm going on a bit now :P Love the blog and love these posts, I find them very interesting to see other peoples opinions in a professional and grown up way :)

    1. Thank you for your comment and thank you for reading! I would never hate you for having an opinion and I understand that not everyone will feel the same way I did and the way others do.

I too was appalled at some of the comments made on one of the looks. The person was vilified for photoshopping their skin and people were just cruel. I felt so bad for that person. Unfortunately trolling and bullying of that nature is common everywhere on the internet, I do wish it was moderated much more closely.

    2. I read 3 of your articles on this matter. I can completely see where you're coming from, but it may be possible that she's a fan of Chinese culture. I don't think she's trying to offend you or anyone else. I don't know her and I was actually looking up reviews to see how this palette was (quickly to find out that it hasn't been released yet) because I need a nice bold yellow. I have Sugarpill's yellow which is highly appraised and with techniques I have gotten it to pop, but I thought maybe "Goldfish" from this palette could do the trick without so much prep-work?

I'm not of Asian heritage, so perhaps I would find this offensive if I was. I really think she's (like Marvelle said)celebrating it. She should have done her research better with wardrobe, but a lot of cosmetics' owners dabble in other industries such as fashion (like Amy from Sugarpill) so it's possible the robe was made by someone Doe knew and decided to use it for the shoot.

I think it could have offended people MORE if she HAD used a Chinese model. I think she was purposely trying to be delicate about the matter and use a racially ambiguous girl. That, and to show that it's not just for Chinese girls- that it's for everyone? I mean, I'm almost sure she's white, but I look white and I'm also American Indian and Portugese, so looks are deceiving... and I mean I look WHITE lol.

It was nice to hear/read your side though. I do think she should have E-Mailed you like she said she would EVEN if it was just to say "Hey, I re-read your article and I no longer have any questions" She did kind of blow you off there. That sucks!

I keep hearing amazing things then crappy things about this company and I don't know whether to purchase from them or not :/ I was going to buy their lipstick, but I use MAC which I already adore because of it's moisturizing consistency and light pinks, so why would I spend MORE money on a brand I don't know much about? (especially after reading bad things) I know that sounds a little small-minded but I already know I adore MAC's lipsticks and I'm weary of this company now.

My friend bought a lipstick from Lime Crime and the lipstick came with a cracked cap and instead of sending her a new lipstick, they sent her a new cap. I thought that was kind of lame because my friend's concern was "Is it dried out now?"

I'm in the middle of making my own cosmetic's line and I would never just send someone a new cap. They'd get a brand new lipstick and probably a sample of something else. I'm waiting for youtube reviews of Chinadoll to come out before I even THINK about buying this palette again!

Your article did help, because it made me weary and now I'm going to wait for more reviews. Thank you.

  2. @ Marvelle: I totally agree. Anyone who attacks someone purely for their looks is abhorrent and are just as bad as those who are mocking people who have tried to explain why people are offended.
@ Mai: When I read your cryptic tweet, I was actually hoping that Doe had reached out to you..(actually I also thought it might have been blogger too but..:P). I know there are PLENTY of shit stirring people who just hate on LC for the sake of hating and jump on every little thing. I want nothing to do with them because it's immature and petty and does nothing for people who have legitimate concerns.

What i'd love to see is for LC to acknowledge that some of us were offended, change the promotion of the palette and give it a better re-launch. That would send out a huge message that LC is willing to listen to people's concerns and do something about it. In return i'd hope that those of us who raised the issue in the first place would be gracious about the fact that there was a response, acknowledge that something was done and not be spiteful about it and be like oh I told you so LC sucks!! We don't have to love LC but we should give credit where it's due.

My biggest. and still is problem is the fact that there are people who are still pretty much plugging their hands over their ears and going "lalalala don't want to listen to what you say you're a hater, not offended this is why i'm not offended and you shouldn't be either". I appreciate that LC has it's share of haters, but not all of us are just stirring the pot. I've said it before and i'll say it again the palette looks nice. We can't make a judgement call about how it performs because, it's not released yet and doing so is unfair and spiteful. Packaging wise, it fits the company perfectly. The promotion for it, doesn't.

:x Maybe we could get a nod from LC about the we're a culture not a costume poster too? I know that's asking wayyy too much though..but to me that would really be the admirable thing to do.

  3. "in your opinion, what should Lime Crime do about what's happened so far and with the Chinadoll campaign?"

Doe Deere should apologise for everything, SINCERELY, and close down business for good. She has slandered, stolen, cheated, lied and done some other terrible things alongside. That's the end of it, there's no more to be said.

    1. Yeah, but you know this will never happen. I really wish she could change her business techniques- acknowledge that in the past she did repackage, and she hasn't always conducted herself in a lady-like or even just professional manner. I wish she could or would sincerely change, and be apologetic for the people she's slandered/stolen from/cheated/and lied to.

I think at best she will relaunch it with a new promo/new names and apologize for offending people. We'll see.

  4. I'm pleased she's chosen to respond - everyone makes mistakes and should have the chance to amend/explain/aplogize, etc - but I'm very interested to see what she wil say. I've never purchased from the brand and am not saying I never would - although most likely I wouldn't - because there are certainly corporate brands which I buy from which are just as bloody bad. I hope they change the name of the palette at least - I don't know how I feel about the image if they did, but if they changed the name from 'OMGYAYCHINA!' that would be something, at least.

  5. She was probably going to try and bribe you, but now that you don't want any products I have no guesses as to her intentions. The censorship on Lime Crime's Facebook wall has proven that any conversation will not be tolerated. Unfortunately for Dough, makeupbee allows for discussion and so does this blog. She tried to silence us and failed, but I doubt she'll backtrack at all.

  6. I think we've talked about limecrime before on twitter, and I've made my feelings clear re: the brand. I gave the brand a chance and wasn't impressed and nothing she's done has really made a difference to my bad impressions.

    1. I hope you asked for a refund. If you haven't, do it now! Money talks, and this will show Doe that she needs to listen to her customers.

  7. Thats good she has contacted you. I hope she is considering making some changes to the ads.

  8. Even if she were to change her offensive campaign it doesn't change the fact that she has scammed and treated people horribly, over and over. It's not just the repackaging and the misleading photoshopped advertisements either. Before she was even doing make up she was selling cheap party favor heart shaped sunglasses (the kind you could get at a dollar store) for $40 saying they were designer. She sold clothing on e-bay that she made, one time she sold a dress that was hemmed with Duct Tape, this dress was bought by someones mom as a gift and the tape obviously wasn't visible in the photos she saw before buying it. Doe said the buying was an "asshole" for being foolish enough to buy her clothes. Doe set up two different raffles where she said the money was going to go to a "charity", when asked the name of the charity she made one out and people caught it didn't exist, the second time she tried this people had their suspicions again and paypal actually shut Doe's account down after finding no evidence of her charity drive. Also on the subject of her photoshopping her products to the point of being misleading, she has also been proven to have shopped a picture of a revlon lipstick and claiming it's her own brand.

    1. As of 7am PST, I have not received an email. I am going to give her the benefit of the doubt that perhaps my FB messages aren't going through and so I'll email her or leave a comment on her public FB about it by the end of today.

If I don't get a response by Friday (which will have been a week since she first FB messaged me, you can be sure I'll be writing about it

  10. I think it was unnecessary to add the -whether you like it or not- on the release of the palette.
